Wooden hand-made vehicle driven to auction

A rare but very unusual car is going under the hammer, the wooden Q312 RAE Hustler offers a unique opportunity to purchase a very special hand-made six-wheeled 1988 kit car as designed by William Towns and built by John Brazier of Bristol in the UK. Source: Timberbiz, photos East Bristol Auctions

Less than 400 are thought to have been built, many of those being fibreglass. This 1988 example is one of just a handful of all-wood versions built.

This is a car with a wooden monocoque design, wooden body panels and wooden interior. It is fitted with a 1.3-litre Austin Allegro engine, with Mini wheel subframes to the front and rear.

John Brazier was an ex-Rolls Royce engineer who during the 1960s helped to work on Concorde. He later became a woodwork and metal work teacher at Brislington.

This Hustler was engineered in the mid-1980s and went on to serve as the main family vehicle for more than 12 years taking the Brazier family on various holidays. It has remained in dry storage since the early 2000s.

Fitted with Allegro seats, the vehicle can sit up to eight occupants, two in the front, two in the middle and twin bench seats to the rear can accommodate a further four passengers. The attention to detail within the vehicle is second to none – Mr Brazier even hand-making the gear knob, handbrake handle and steering wheel from wood.

Mr Brazier was keen to point out that it never failed an MOT in its working life.

The vehicle will go to live auction with in-person bidding available.

BBC Bargain Hunt will be filming at this auction
