Wood machining may be declassified as apprentice numbers are too low

Wood machining is at serious risk of being declassified as a trade due a declining number of apprentices over the past decade, according to the managing director of Accurate Australia and New Zealand Craig Honeyman. Source: Timberbiz

Mr Honeyman is working to gather data from stakeholders across the industry on how many apprentices they intend putting on in the next five years.

Skilled operators are crucial to the success of the timber industry and are currently in high demand and listed in the National Skills Needs List.

Mr Honeyman will be presenting this information to a Federal Government committee that evaluates which trade courses need to be recognised based on enrolment numbers.

The committee will make its recommendations at the end of the month.
