Washing paper cups for re-use

Tokan Kogyo a subsidiary of Toyo Seikan Group Holdings and Nippon Paper Industries were demonstrating the sorting and collection of used paper cups for recycling at the International Media Centre (IMC) which was open 18-21 May 2023, in conjunction with the G7 Hiroshima Summit. Source: Timberbiz

Tokan Kogyo provided “ECO-Friendly Cups” as tasting cups; these paper cups are using thinned wood as raw materials by Nippon Paper Industries. After use, the paper cups are washed by the “Re-CUP WASHER” developed by Tokan Kogyo and then recycled by Nippon Paper Industries into containerboard.

The “Re-CUP WASHER” is a device for converting used paper cups from waste to recyclable resources to help raise consumer awareness of recycling and to encourage a change in consumer behaviour toward active participation in recycling.

Used paper cups usually become combustible waste because they contain residues, such as dirt and leftover drinks. However, with the “Re-CUP WASHER”, consumers can change this waste to recyclable resources with a single wash. This initiative aims to establish a “CUP to CUP Recycling System” that recycles used paper cups into new paper cups.

Tokan Kogyo is promoting the recycling of paper cups through a “CUP to CUP Recycling System” using the “Re-CUP WASHER.”
