Two new courses for mass timber mid-rise construction

As mass timber projects gain in popularity, it is important for the design and build sector to have access to the most current know-how. Through a long-standing collaboration with the Property Council of Australia, WoodSolutions has released two new CPD courses on timber mid-rise structures accessible through the Construct NSW online platform. These professional development opportunities provide a unique insight into planning and building mass timber projects and a deep, practical understanding of the benefits and specifications of timber structures.

Developed in collaboration with the Office of the NSW Building Commissioner, the courses draw from the wisdom gained by the MAP. Over six years, the MAP successfully advised and supported the development of mid-rise timber projects across Australia.

“These courses are an exceptional opportunity for industry members to engage with WoodSolutions’ wealth of knowledge and experience using mass timber in the design and build sector,” said Head of the WoodSolutions’ Program Eileen Newbury.

“With ever-increasing market demand for more ecofriendly and sustainable buildings, the opportunities for mass timber projects are growing, especially in those multi-residential and student housing projects currently being constructed using steel and concrete.”

The courses are open to anyone in the industry with an interest in mid-rise timber projects, and each takes two hours to complete.

While the courses were designed to be complementary they can also be undertaken individually.

The ‘Feasibility, risk analysis and procurement of mid-rise timber structures’ course is delivered from the point of view of developers and builders. Industry professionals who undertake the course will learn how timber structures can add value to project outcomes, how to conduct feasibility analysis including risk assessments and costings, as well as how to draft an expression of interest for potential suppliers.

The ‘Design and compliance for mid-rise timber structures’ course shows students the consultant’s approach. Participants will learn how to optimise design using the full range of engineered wood products and systems, meet code requirements, and achieve best outcomes for safety and quality on site.
