Swiss company builds new plant after years’ operating at full capacity

Over the past three years, the management of Tschopp Holzindustrie in Switzerland has been working intensively on planning a new sawmill. This will replace the existing plant, which has been operating at full capacity in three shifts for years. Source: Timberbiz

The three shifts continued despite the worldwide state of emergency caused by the corona virus.

The building application was submitted at the end of August 2020 with the permit expected in January 2021, after which construction will start immediately.

All machines and systems have already been ordered. The company Springer from Austria supplies the log yard, the sawing line comes from USNR AB from Sweden, the sorting and stacking systems come from TC Maschinenbau from Austria and the disposal technology is supplied by Vecoplan from Germany.

Commissioning is scheduled for spring 2023 after a two-year construction phase to build the 123-metre-long and 20-metre-high hall plus assembly of the machinery and conveyor technology.

The new sawmill is being built on a plot adjacent to the existing site.

At heart of the new plant are high-performance Quadro band saws from USNR AB. A Quadro band saw consists of a unit of four band saws. Two Quadro units are installed, making eight band saws available. This innovative saw technology enables a very high cutting performance, flexibility in the cutting patterns and at the same time a large yield.

For some time, the company has wanted to manufacture other wood-based materials in addition to the main product formwork panels, wood pellets and green electricity. This was previously not possible with the existing sawmill due to capacity and technology.

With this investment, Tschopp Holzindustrie AG is setting an important example for the domestic wood industry in order to provide more wood-based materials made of Swiss wood for the market in the long term.
