Ms Downey has been with the organisation and in the role of Senior Marketing and Communications Manager since 2021.

She replaces Eileen Newbury who is stepping down after 13 years with the FWPA.

Ms Newbury has been a powerhouse in the organisation and along with her team has overseen several important initiatives that have helped reframe the industry and how it is perceived.

Andrew Leighton, CEO of FWPA said Ms Downey had shown leadership and exemplary performance in her current role, quickly grasping the nuances of both the organisation and industry.

“Sarah was the ideal choice. She is familiar with the role and all elements of FWPA’s diverse range of marketing programs. Her knowledge and experience will ensure a seamless transition for the organisation,” Mr Leighton said.

“The step up for Sarah also comes at an important time in our organisation’s future as we roll out our new strategic plan.

“Sarah has a clear understanding of FWPA’s objective of driving growth in the demand for forest and wood products, and of our commitment to delivering a high level of transparency and accountability to our members. She exemplifies the qualities of openness, honesty, and collaboration that we strive to embed in FWPA’s culture,” he said.

Ms Downey said she was thrilled to take on the role and would like to thank Mr Leighton and the board for their confidence in offering her the position.

“FWPA is an incredible organisation that plays a critical part in both educating and promoting the benefits of wood and wood products.

“I love the diversity of the industry, the people, and the many ways we engage with our stakeholders. It’s always interesting and challenging,” she said.

“This role comes with a talented team and the support of my colleagues. I look forward to leading FWPA’s marketing and communications effort and am confident we can continue to deliver effective and impactful marketing programs on behalf of our members and key stakeholders.”

Ms Downey officially commences her new position on 22 May.

“On behalf of everyone at FWPA we congratulate Sarah and look forward to working with and supporting her in her new role,” said Mr Leighton.
