Recreating packaging with a paper twist

The biannual Recreate Packaging competition challenged the international design community to generate new and exciting packaging solutions. The theme of this year’s contest was “Design Circular”. Competitors were tasked with creating the next generation of renewable and circular packaging: to replace fossil-based materials with renewable ones, to reduce waste and enable easier and more efficient recycling. Since people today want to live greener lives, they look for choices that can make the world a better place.

Introducing the winners of the Recreate Packaging competition 2021.

  • 1st place, “FlatBowl” by Guillermo Acevedo Beltran from Colombia.
  • 2nd place, “Shirt Packaging” by Viktoriia Schmidtand Arthur Schmidt from Germany.
  • 3rd place, “LOOP – The infinite Packaging” by Antonella Zeverino, Denise Aimar, Chiara Borghi and Valentina Rizzo from Italy.

Industry experts were invited to form a jury and determine the winners of the competition. They were to evaluate each design from these aspects: sustainability, functionality, user experience, market potential, innovation, production readiness and retail & logistic perspectives.

FlatBowl

For restaurants offering take-away, FlatBowl would really be an interesting opportunity. It stands on the table and it’s completely flat, so you don’t need much room for storage. There are many designs in the food service industry, but few are as aesthetic as this. This is also great from a retailer point of view, a bowl in the middle lifts the whole product.

Shirt Packaging

This concept for online sales is great, it ticks a lot of boxes, especially functionality and fit for channel. This design has a very good execution, it has multiple uses from a retail presentation to an in-home hanger, and an e-commerce pack.

Traditionally e-commerce has had a lot of plastic, and this design would reduce it. You can easily send it without any additional packaging or take it home without a plastic bag.

It also creates a certain dramatology – unboxing experience can be rather exciting: first you see a part of the shirt and then discover the rest. The different layers can also be used for communication.

Loop

The design is appealing and original and the modularity is fantastic. There is nothing more efficient than a square box! It also offers an alternative to plastic punnets and is suited for sophisticated branding and printing. It’s good for transportation and it will both display and protect the fruit also on the shelf.
