Imports of white copy paper to Australia on the increase

Imports of A4 White Copy Paper to Australia increased slightly in November 2022, recorded at 848 tonnes for the month. Prices increased again in November to a record high, with the average CiF or ‘landed’ price (AUD1,952/t) remaining significantly higher than the FoB or ‘goods alone’ price. The cost of freight to Australia of copy paper is currently AUD213/t, 10.9% of the total cost. Import volumes remain low, but that is likely about to change, as local production of white copy paper comes to a close.

Australian imports were down 70.8% year-ended November 2022, to total 10,125 tonnes. In New Zealand, where imports make up the full supply, annual imports were down 30.4% to 20,711 tonnes over the same period.

The entire Australian import trade remains under confidentiality restrictions, granted by the ABS, at the request of one or more importers. The result is that country level detail is not available.

In New Zealand, both the FoB copy paper price and the CiF price slightly dropped in November, the first downturn after several months of rapid increases. The average price was recorded at NZDFob1,802/t (NZDCiF1,897/t). The import volume increased in November, up to 2,238t. Annual supply to New Zealand totalled 20,711 tonnes year-ended November 2022, down 30.4% on the year prior.
