Forest road maintenance courses

Australian based forest road maintenance courses presented by Forme Consulting Group and Forestry Solutions will be held in Brisbane (18-19 March) and in Melbourne (21-22 March). Source: Timberbiz

The courses are aimed at foresters who are responsible for maintaining forest roads, managing contractors that maintain forest roads, and contractors themselves.

This course is also relevant to forestry consultants, territorial and state authorities and woodlot harvesting managers.

It is applicable to those wanting a refresher as well as those wanting to gain some engineering knowledge to justify their road maintenance decisions.

The courses are run in a series of modules presented by two forest engineers (Andrew McEwan from Forestry Solutions and Chris Carlaw from Forme Consulting Group) who provide their own international experience.

Course participants are encouraged to interact with the presenters and other course participants with their own road maintenance problems/solutions and experience.

The modules covered are:

• Common road defects;
• Recognising defects, identifying the cause of the defect and planning for maintenance;
• Important soil and surfacing material properties that influence road maintenance;
• Roadside maintenance;
• Drainage and stream crossing maintenance;
• Surface maintenance;
• Regravelling/Resurfacing;
• Surfacing operations;
• Road maintenance equipment;
• Financial aspects of road maintenance.

“Forest road maintenance is the most practical of the courses we have presented in the past in which anything that is presented is able to be incorporated immediately into maintenance operations,” said Carlaw.
