Forest fuel load to blame for fires: Tuckey

OUTSPOKEN federal Liberal MP Wilson Tuckey has blamed the major parties for Victoria’s bushfire tragedy, saying it’s been caused by politicians pandering to green votes.
The savage fires have claimed the lives of 108 people with the death toll expected to rise.

Tuckey, a former federal forestry minister, said government policies, which locked up forests, created excessive fuel loads.

He said he expected to be branded insensitive for raising the issue.

But he said reducing the fuel load in forests was a daily requirement, and didn’t always need to be done by burning.

Tuckey said when a forests products industry existed they used access roads and bulldozers which helped to put out a fire the day it started.
