The 2021 Fleetwood Challenge Cup has just launched, with architectural, engineering and construction management (AEC) students set to compete for top honours.

“We believe a new level of fresh and innovative thinking in a collaborative environment is required to push the boundaries to deliver more sustainable, flexible and adaptable accommodation solutions,” advised Jason Kunkler, Chief Operating Officer of Fleetwood Building Solutions.

Each year, students are presented with a unique challenge to help solve key topical issues facing the construction industry and propel it towards a more innovative future.

In 2021, adaptive re-use of existing buildings is the focus of the challenge, a pressing issue in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The construction sector is facing significant global challenges as the world reassembles from the coronavirus pandemic; including housing shortages, demand in the social infrastructure space, lagging productivity, tight labour markets and ageing populations.

“As the peak body for Australia’s offsite construction industry, we see the Fleetwood Challenge Cup as a great opportunity to showcase innovation in action. As we emerge from the pandemic with very high vacancy rates, the need to find sustainable ways to adapt, extend and reconfigure existing buildings using prefabrication and offsite manufacturing is more vital than ever before. We look forward to seeing the creative solutions this year’s teams come up with.” prefabAUS Executive Chair Damien Crough explained.

The 2021 Fleetwood Challenge Cup provides the opportunity for emerging talent to leverage the advantages of offsite manufacturing and prefabrication, by developing resilient solutions to address some of the largest challenges our industry faces.

Students will also gain invaluable real-world industry experience and exposure. The student submissions will be judged by a distinguished panel of top AEC industry professionals from leading architecture, engineering, construction and design firms across Australia.

Stay tuned for news of finalist teams in July, ahead of Fleetwood Challenge Cup winners being announced at the annual prefabAUS 2021Conference in September.
