The sawmill in Tambo closed in 2011 but the local council has purchased the mill for $220,000.

Blackall-Tambo Regional Council Mayor Barry Muir said it hopes to receive a timber allocation from the State Government to then lease the mill to local contractors.

He said the mill could create up to 15 jobs.

“The council will hold the actual timber reserves because they can’t be traded off somewhere else,” he said.

“We want the business to operate in this area and it will supply much needed jobs, particularly after the roadworks, flood repairs and things like that.

“It’ll give us much needed jobs into the Tambo community.”
