These are the questions being answered in the Forest Industry Career Mapping Project, a joint initiative between TFFPN and the Tasmania Forestry Hub, with Dr Anna Carew from RMCG contracted to undertake this project. Tracey Taylor, TFFPN’s Manager Workforce and Diversity is leading this project, and believes undertaking industry-wide career mapping is a first for the Tasmanian forest industry.
“An understanding of the career entry points, and educational pathways is critical to attracting, recruiting and retaining the industry’s workforce for the future,” she said.
This project is also key to the activities of the Tasmania Forestry Hub.
“This project is an essential and a key piece of the puzzle which will enable industry moving forward,” Hub General Manager Simon Talbot said.
Input from employers across the industry – both large and small – is encouraged and will be key to the project’s success.
“The project needs to hear the views from harvesting to forest management, to production and everything in-between.” Tracey said.
“This feedback is being captured in two ways – via a Survey Monkey to identify high-priority jobs, followed by optional interviews with individuals to gather further information on priority jobs, skills and training needs.”
Dr Anna Carew is excited to be undertaking this work with the industry.
“We are hearing firsthand the concerns and challenges facing employers in the forestry sector,” Dr Carew said.
“This project is highlighting some of the rich and real opportunities for Tasmanians seeking a career in forestry, and also giving clear signals on constraints and barriers for employers wanting to recruit, upskill and advance the forestry workforce to meet future needs.”

It should be noted that this is not a quantitative survey, so project organisers want to make sure it is representative of all sectors.
“We need to capture the views of employers across the board. Based on the information we collect, we can focus our workforce and training efforts where they are most needed and will make the most impact for our industry,” Simon said.
