While police and fire investigators initially treated the fierce blaze as suspicious, they now believe the fire in the warehouse at Bungalow may have been started by electrical equipment stored inside.

Queensland Master Builders regional manager Ron Bannah said the fire could affect the building trade in Cairns in the short term.

“The fire was in the trade shed where all the trade guys go to buy their timber, ply and sheets of plasterboard,” he said.

“I’m sure it will have some sort of an impact but these guys (Cairns Hardware) are very astute operators and I’m sure they would have swung into action.”
