Bart Mellish, Assistant Minister to the Premier for Veterans’ Affairs and COVID Economic Recovery will be taking to the stage for the Brisbane event’s keynote presentation, “Pathway to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics”.

“As an industry we all understand the opportunity for timber to play a pivotal role in delivering a climate-positive Olympics,” said Timber Queensland CEO, Mick Stephens.

“Using timber materials would make a significant contribution toward a Green Games through the carbon sequestered and stored in the buildings and venues themselves while lowering the emissions footprint from the construction phase.

“We can also think big to showcase innovative timber designs with beautiful local timbers and engineered wood products on a large creative scale. It is critical to be having these conversations now to identify these opportunities as part of our commitment to leading action to support the Olympics plan.”

Registrations are still available for the 31 May – 1 June symposium, which also features a rare tour of leading timber research facilities, networking functions and, thanks to a generous sponsor, even the opportunity for a lucky attendee to win $25,000 for themselves, and another $25,000 for the Future Foresters Initiative.

The event shares critical insights, research and field-proven innovations to support and connect the full timber value chain, covering topics such as:

  • Global investment environment for forests and nature-based assets – opportunities for Queensland
  • Housing and construction outlook
  • Plantation perspectives
  • Timber building innovation: Mass timber buildings
  • Data innovation and automation: forestry applications and outreach tools
  • Workforce development: Forestry Workforce Training Program.
