Australian Timber Design Award Winners

The 2014 Australian Timber Design Award was won by Bates Smart in collaboration with Irwin Allsop Group for the Dandenong, Victoria Mental Health Facility. Sources: Timberbiz, Timber Design Awards

The winning project comprised a series of linked pavilions surrounding internal glazed courtyards.

The extensive use of natural timber internally in walls and ceilings and externally in cladding and exposed structures gave the facility a residential, suburban character. This is enhanced by carefully landscaped courtyards and external garden areas.

Blackbutt timber external cladding and exposed columns were chosen for durability, texture and patterning. They lend a warmth and non-institutional feel to the buildings. The timber is durable, low maintenance, and has begun to age gracefully.

The judging panel found the attention to detail in this project exceptional. They particularly admired the elegant manner in which the buildings and surrounds complement their setting.

Winners were announced at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. A full list of winners and photographs of the projects can be viewed at www.timberawards.com.au
