NF McDonnell and Sons officially opened stage one of its $2 million sawmill redevelopment.

Managing director Ian McDonnell said the company has invested in the future of the industry and plans to take advantage of markets overseas and domestically.

He said stage one of the development has created 20 jobs at the mill.

“We’ve employed more people over the last two years and obviously for every direct job there’s other indirect jobs,” he said. “As I said, a lot of local businesses have participated in the build here and we intend to grow our business and employ more people in the future.

“The first thing we need to do is be positive about our community and about any industry that we’re in down here because the old saying about the harder you work the luckier you get is so true.

“We need to get out there and create that atmosphere, that positive atmosphere, as far as I’m concerned and I think the sooner we do that the sooner we’ll help ourselves.”
