These related to timber harvesting operations in the Central Highlands and East Gippsland regions.

“The Timber Release Plans outline the areas VicForests is planning to harvest and are updated annually,” said VicForests director of planning, Lachlan Spencer.

“The changes proposed in 2013 include the modification of existing harvesting areas (coupes) based on improved planning information, and the addition of new harvesting areas to replace areas that have been harvested and successfully regenerated,” said Spencer.

Community feedback is sought on specific operational aspects of the proposed harvesting including the timing of operations, the use of particular haulage routes, the proximity of proposed operations to private property or public use areas, and the identification and protection of other forest values within the specific areas proposed for harvesting.

“We welcome the community to raise any specific concerns they may have about the proposed operations. Public submissions are closely considered by VicForests’ Planning staff before the plans are finalised,” Spencer said.

The finalised Timber Release Plans, along with all submissions received, will be provided to DPI for consideration and approval. These plans must be approved by DPI before harvesting commences.

“Public consultation is an important part of this process and offers the community the opportunity to have input into our planning process.

“VicForests’ planning process is particularly detailed and comprehensive, and looks to ensure the long-term sustainability of the forestry industry in Victoria,” said Spencer.

A schedule of proposed coupes, maps indicating approximate locations and a form for public comment is available on VicForests’ website www.vicforests.com.au until May 24 2013.
