Timber knowledge courses

These courses are for anyone new to the industry or wanting to expand on the their timber knowledge.

The courses are designed for timber and wood product sales people who need to provide comprehensive advice to customers on the correct timber to use for their applications.

Partcipants will gain an understanding of wood technology and various production processes in order to recommend suitable products to customers and covers a great deal of information including

  • Features, benefits and limitations of timber as a product
  • The lifecycle of timber products
  • Timber classification and naming, wood structure and tree growth
  • Wood properties (strength, durability, hardness, appearance, density etc)
  • Timber treatment, hazard levels and precautions in use of treated timber
  • Log conversion processes
  • Forest product certification schemes
  • Sourcing technical information
  • Keeping timber looking great (finishes, stains and oils)
  • Innovative, new and emerging wood products/ technologies

The course includes a visit to timber processing facilities to see applications of wood technology and successful participants will receive a statement of attainment for the unit and can apply the wood and timber product knowledge in partial completion of certficate II in timber merchandising.
