Sparks from welding equipment are believed to have caused the fire at the Timber Link site at Bell Bay.

It is believed nearby welding equipment may have started the blaze in a conveyor belt used to transport logs.

George Town brigade chief Andrew Taylor said mill workers initially used a water cannon on the fire.

“It’s because of those people, and I presume the training they’ve had, that has minimised the damage,” he said.

It took 16 firefighters to bring the blaze under control, which has caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

The fire was contained to the machinery, which could have spread to the main building.
