Timber Marshalling Services has opened a sawmill at Bondoola near Yeppoon.

Managing director Brendon O’Connor said the family-owned business has received a warm welcome.

“It’s been great,” he said. “In Tasmania you don’t get that sort of support because it’s very much divided.”

The mill is mostly new but has used machinery from its operations down south and other companies such as Gunns.

The wood will be cut from plantations in Byfield and near Gladstone.

O’Connor said it will supply the Queensland market north of Bundaberg in the state’s southeast.

Livingstone Shire Mayor Bill Ludwig has welcomed the old sawmill site springing back into action.

“This is sensational outcome for our region, ” he said. “The saving for our building industry will be a third of the cost for structural timber.”

The mill will provide up to 120 jobs.
