“It’s important that our illegal logging laws operate efficiently, protect the Australian market from illegally logged timber, and manage the burden on our timber importers and processors,” Assistant Minister Duniam said.

“In 2023, the regulation will wind down unless there is intervention.

“During this review, we will consult with stakeholders on potential improvements to the illegal logging laws so we can make an informed decision on their future.

“Through consultation, we will be able to establish the effectiveness of the laws, and determine what changes, if any, are needed.

“Illegal logging is a major global problem that has extremely harmful impacts on forest ecosystems, communities and economies.

“When we introduced the Illegal Logging Prohibition Act 2012 and the Illegal Logging Prohibition Regulation 2012, they were among the first of their kind internationally.

“The regulation makes it harder for illegally logged timber to be imported or processed in Australia. The obligations help businesses prove to their customers that their products are from legal sources and support those doing the right thing.

“It is vital we continue to take appropriate steps to combat the illegal trade in timber products.

“lllegal logging comprises the fourth largest illegal trade worldwide after arms, drugs and human trafficking, and is frequently linked with other forms of serious crime.”

Public consultation on the regulation is now open and will close on 31 August 2021.
