The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) report, Australian forest and wood products statistics: September and December quarters 2016, showed that both the volume and value of logs harvested in 2015 -16 had outstripped previous years.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Anne Ruston welcomed the result, saying it reflected growing demand for Australian timber in both domestic and international markets.

“Growth in demand for Australia’s sustainably managed timber and wood products has resulted in a record harvest of softwood and hardwood plantation logs,” Minister Ruston said.

“The Government recognises that our forests provide significant benefits for Australians and we are committed to supporting this important sector that contributed more than $22.1 billion in total forest products manufacturing to the economy in 2014-15.

“The forest industry is vital to our regional communities, employing more than 64,000 people.

“The Australian Government remains committed to creating a stable and sustainable business environment that encourages innovation and investment in the future of the forestry sector.

“Australian timber is building its reputation as a world class product and this most recent growth is a reflection of strong demand. And it’s no wonder. Responsibly sourced wood is renewable, it stores carbon, it’s beautiful and sustainably managed forests can provide resources for both today and the future.”
