Promotion of sustainable forestry in Pacific Islands

The promotion of sustainable forest management continues as 20 participants from six Pacific Island countries participated in a recent two-week regional forest inventory workshop in Labasa. Source: The Fiji Times Online

The training was organised by the SPC, which said in a statement the training would support the participants in establishing a regional forest inventory facility to provide training and technical backstopping.

“This is to assist and support Pacific Island countries in establishing and maintaining their forest monitoring systems for REDD+ and also taking into account the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks,” the statement said.

“Forests provide many products and services that are vital to the well-being of Pacific communities however, they must be managed in a sustainable manner,” the statement read.
