Production Forest Methodologies for Emissions Reduction Fund

Dr Hilary Smith

An online webinar by Dr Hilary Smith of Latitude Forest Services will detail the results of a recently published Forest and Wood Products Australia (FWPA) funded project entitled Production Forest Methodologies for the Emissions Reduction Fund (PNC354-1415). Source: Timberbiz

The project sought to capture opportunities under Emissions Reductions Fund (ERF) for forest managers and wood processors in both the native forest and plantation sectors through the development of a suite of Green House Gas (GHG) reduction methodologies including through:

  • Carbon sequestration in long-rotation plantations;
  • Carbon sequestration through the retention of plantations established on economically marginal sites which are under threat of conversion into agricultural lands;
  • Carbon storage in harvested wood products (HWPs);
  • Use of biomass from forest harvest operations and wood processing facilities to generate bioenergy;
  • Increasing carbon stocks in forests through enhanced forest management; and
  • Reduced emissions through bushfire prevention.

Dr Smith worked in forest policy for more than 15 years, first with Queensland Department of Primary Industries and then State Forests of NSW before becoming a forestry consultant in 2010.

Dr Smith has a Masters in Law from ANU and PhD in Geography from Adelaide University.
