Southern Region planning manager Kevin Petty said Forestry Corporation of NSW was supporting this year’s Shoalhaven Timber Festival despite large numbers of local staff being deployed to fires around the State.

“We have had a very busy start to the fire season and many of our local staff are heavily involved in the State’s coordinated fire fighting effort, but we are still throwing our support behind this event,” Petty said.

“The Dunn & Lewis Foundation does admirable work providing young people with mental health services, education, employment and support with housing and transport, and we have donated five high quality sawlogs from local forests that will be auctioned to raise funds for this great cause.

“Forestry Corporation’s local Aboriginal Culture and Heritage Officer will also craft a traditional bark canoe that will be auctioned at the festival.

“The NSW timber industry contributes nearly $1 billion a year to the State’s economy and creates around 13,000 jobs in NSW, mainly in regional communities.

“Events like the Shoalhaven Timber Festival are an important way for our industry to support the inspirational work of community groups like the Dunn & Lewis Foundation in these regions.”
