The council’s planning committee voted 5-4 to recommend a permit is issued for a waterborne plant.

Leading opposition to the project is Cr Louise Berkelmans who said use of chromium copper arsenic represented a serious threat to nearby businesses, including a dance school, party shop and other recreational enterprises.

Cr Rafal Kaplon said the project had been given a clean bill of health by the EPA and other regulatory authorities.

Proprietor of applicant company, Auslak Timber Treatment Pty Ltd, Alston Rodrigo, said the plant would be sited in a timber yard.

“It will be similar to three plants already operating without any problems in Greater Dandenong,” he said. “There is no risk.”

He said the project would help secure employment at the timber yard and create jobs at a time when manufacturing opportunities were hard to find.
