Much sought after timber goes under the hammer

The Forest Products Commission (FPC) is expecting a large crowd of wood enthusiasts and spirited interest from bidders who attend a log auction to be held in Harvey next week.

FPC auction coordinator Steve Davis said a range of timber would go under the hammer including about 400 tonnes of karri, marri, jarrah, tuart, blackbutt, sheoak, paperbark, pinaster pine, various banksia and woody pear.

“More than 400 tonnes of assorted native speciality logs, including large individual logs of jarrah (logs and burls), karri, marri, wandoo and more than 200 tonnes of blackbutt are to go under the hammer.

“Sawn timber and slabs in those species will be available, including a woody pear table pack and there are some quality Jarrah burls on offer. Rich colours and distinctive grains are a feature of high grade Western Australian native timber which is favoured by wood enthusiasts in the manufacture of unique furniture such as a dining room table or a perfect bench top.

“The November 7 auction, to be held at FPC’s Harvey Mill, includes extras which may not have appeared on the original auction list, including a dehumidifying kiln and a heat/vent kiln, each with an approximate capacity of 60m³. Large, thick slabs require about two years to dry. Ideally, they should be placed on a concrete flat area, under cover and raised off the ground to allow air to circulate. It will then be ready to fashion into tomorrow’s heirloom,” Davis said.

Timber can be inspected by contacting Steve Davis on mobile phone 0427 380 632 for an appointment during normal business hours Monday to Friday, or on the day of the auction between 8.00am and 9.30am.
