More cadet foresters needed in Tasmania

The cadets have commenced an Australian School Based Apprenticeship whilst completing their year 12 studies and spend one day a week with Sustainable Timber Tasmania, where they learn about the business and participate in skills based training with their mentors.

The southern region cadet, Jamie, is currently working with the seeding team and roading crew, assisting in recovery work from the recent 2018/2019 bushfire season.

He enjoys the work culture at Sustainable Timber Tasmania and the variety of challenges he is presented with in his position as Cadet Forester.

“One day I would love to complete my Certificate III in Forest Operations and join the regeneration team at Sustainable Timber Tasmania,” he said.

Alongside skills based learning, the cadets are completing their Certificate II in Forest Growing and Management.

Sustainable Timber Tasmania is taking on three more Cadet Foresters in 2020 and is looking for expressions of interest.

The Cadet Forester Program is an opportunity to teach young people about the forest industry and foster growth and responsibility as they enter the workforce.

“I encourage other people in year 12 to take advantage of the Cadet Forester Program at Sustainable Timber Tasmania,” Jamie said. “It is a great entrance point into the industry where you get the opportunity to both study and learn the ropes out in the field.

“The team at Sustainable Timber Tasmania are respectful, caring and supportive and will assist you in whatever way they can to help you to succeed.”
