New housing starts have declined, but the mix of housing types is changing significantly.

Although there has been a decline in the number of single-dwelling commencements and little growth forecast, there has been significant growth in the development of multi-dwelling homes, which now represent more than 30% of new construction across Australia, and predicted to grow.

Despite not being a traditionally strong area for timber construction, since 2009 timber buildings between seven and 10 stories have been built in Melbourne, London and Sweden.

Timber is also being used in new ways in commercial developments, including the Docklands Library and Community Centre developed by Lend Lease.

This is an opportunity for the industry to learn more in an event that features Keith Crews from UTS and Alex Nock from Nock Architects.

It will provide the latest information on building the proposition for timber in new developments, from a materials and applications perspective.
