Festival and awards organiser Jim Butler is calling for nominations from family, friends and co-workers of those in the timber industry.

Twelve awards will be up for grabs, ranging from High School Woodworker of the Year and Builder of the Year, to Sawmill Worker of the Year and Men’s Shed Member of the Year.

The main award will go to the Timber Veteran of the Year and will recognise a local resident that has a lifelong association with the timber industry.

“People can nominate anyone they think is worthy of an award and we will contact that person for approval before entering them in the competition,” Butler said.

“All categories will be judged by outsiders based on contribution to the industry or quality of workmanship.

“People can nominate themselves or someone they know.”

“This the first time we’ve had anything like this for the local timber industry,” he explained.

“There are so many people, from builders’ apprentices to hobbyists, working with timber and we want to recognise them.”

The awards will be held the weekend before the timber festival which will host an indoor historical and photographic display as well as outdoor exhibitions and demonstrations.

The festival will be held on November 24, 2012.
