Workers were “gutted” as they arrived for work to find the gates locked, CFMEU Greater Green Triangle district secretary Brad Coates said.
“They have spent two years not knowing if they had a job or not and have just been getting back into the swing of things,” he said. “All their entitlements are all basically denied for them at the moment.”
One hundred workers from Carter Holt Harvey’s Lakeside and Pine Moulding mills worked their final shifts last week when the plants closed.
The mill closures have been blamed on cheap imported timbers, high local log prices and the first effects of the State Government forward selling 100 years of ForestrySA pine harvests to the Campbell Group.
Opposition forestry spokesman Adrian Pederick said the closure was another blow to South-East families.
“It was only in August that South East Pine Sales tried to resurrect this mill from Gunns and it is unfortunate the employment fears held by these people then were realised today,” Pederick said.
