The Timber Development Association (TDA) has announced a second series of training seminars on the Australian Illegal Logging Regulation and timber due diligence.

The training will occur just before the commencement of the Illegal Logging Regulation in November 2014 and will cover who the regulation applies to, what the regulation requires and how to undertake due diligence for illegally logged timber.

The declaration that importers will have to make at port of entry will also be detailed.

The Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth seminars are open to importers of timber, plywood, veneer, MDF, shutters, joinery, flat packs, wine barrels, paper and wood furniture, their service providers, retailers and even overseas suppliers.

“While many will argue the merits of the regulation as the vast majority of imports are from legally harvested wood the reality is that from 30 November most importers of timber products will have to comply,” said Andrew Dunn, CEO of the TDA.

To make compliance easier the TDA has developed free timber due diligence tools to complement the guidance provided by the Australian Government.

The tools have been developed with the support of timber importers, via Forest and Wood Products Australia.

“The training sets participants up to be much better prepared than their competitors. It can also assist reduce over-compliance which is costly,” said Stephen Mitchell, sustainability program manager with TDA, who will be the main presenter.

“The previous seminars we held in June were very well received as the tools are very practical,” he said.

The seminars are being conducted in conjunction with The Forest Trust, a specialist in responsible sourcing of timber from high risk areas and wood species.
