IFA conference in the centenary capital

Managing Our Forests into the 21st Century is the theme for the Institute of Foresters of Australia (IFA) national conference in Canberra from 7-11 April.

“One of the reasons we chose Canberra as the venue for our 2013 conference is that it coincides with the city’s centenary celebrations.

“All Australians have a link with their nation’s capital city, and we sometimes take it for granted. The IFA conference in 2013 presents an ideal opportunity to get closer to the capital,” said conference chairman Stuart Davey.

“Of particular interest to foresters will be the opening this year of a new arboretum as part of the centenary.

“When complete it will be a realisation of Burley Griffin’s vision where ‘trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants are cultivated for the purpose of conservation, preservation, research, education and display’.”

The program’s key theme areas are:
• Forest politics – policy, management and public perceptions
• Forces for change – financing, social factors, water management; biodiversity considerations; carbon sequestration; operational and market innovations
• Urban forestry

The line up of includes Dr Peter Holmgren, director general for the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Dr William (Bill) Jackson chief executive of Parks Victoria and director of National Parks for the State of Victoria, Jan Davis chief executive officer Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association, Ric Sinclair managing director for Forest and Wood Products Australia Limited (FWPA and David Pollard CEO of the Australian Forest Products Association (AFPA).
