The region’s logo may be ‘Hawke’s Bay Wine Country’ but local foresters would prefer to change the W to P! There is 135,000 hectares of plantation resource split between a few larger companies and many smaller growers.

Conference speakers will address key issues within each of the following sessions:
Operating within the law
• Land use challenges
• Shaping a better industry
• Harvest volumes and logistics
• Markets
• Increasing the value of forests

Conference speakers include:
• Doug Ducker, managing director of Pan Pac Forest Products Limited on How are we tackling our challenges and adding value from forest growing and processing in Hawke’s Bay?
• Jo Goodhew (MP), associate Minister for Primary Industries: – A Government’s treatment of forestry – how does National aim to support forestry in New Zealand?
Graeme Norton, founder and a director of 3R Group will be the dinner speaker.

He has more than 40 years’ experience in business, 15 of which he has spent working directly with organisations and industries to develop more sustainable services and products.

His business background is in banking, business consulting, recycling and sustainability.

Field trips have been planned to coincide with the conference.

Option 1: A visit to Cape Sanctuary, which is a unique biodiversity project with kiwi and other species thriving in productive landscapes of forest, farming and golf. The famous David Trubridge workshop and studio has wooden art and furniture pieces that are exported around the world. Kanuka Engineered Wood Products makes massive laminated beams engineered from radiata.

Option 2: Pan Pac is one of New Zealand’s few single site integrated forest products operations. You will see a new 3PY optimisation plant and log yard, product innovations and management of waste products. Travel to Esk forest to see the excellent clonal trial. Then visit the Rayonier/Matariki Glengarry forest for a last chance look at the Forest Research silviculture and breeds trial from 1987. This trial and forest, has some of the most impressive radiata growth rates around.
