Gottstein wood science course

Forest products are much more efficient users of energy than other materials and there is now a decreasing availability of products from some regions and changes in quality from others. A greater understanding of the user’s final requirements is needed to adjust to this situation. Source: Timberbiz

The demand could be for high quality appearance grade products or for uniform quality and lower costs obtained through more efficient conversion, processing and usage of other products.

A sound knowledge is needed to cope with the changing quality of raw materials and to satisfy stringent market demands. To achieve this, senior management needs to be aware of the broader, basic aspects of wood science and technology, and the new techniques being introduced.

This Gottstein Trust Wood Science Course over five days – from 16-21 February 2020 is based in Canberra and has been planned to provide this information. The course will assist the decision makers in the industry to gain greater efficiency in their operations.

The one-week course is ideal for team members of all levels, especially those new to the industry.  Participants learn about the biological characteristics of wood and how these must be understood and dealt with through the milling and manufacturing processes.

Another factor is how forest or plantation environmental sustainability carries through the value chain as harvested logs undergo conversion into wood products.

Typically the course has participants from a wide range of work roles  including people working in finance or administration, operations, procurement, management, program, planning or policy roles and company directors. It has relevance for companies which provide services to the industry as well.

A well-rounded program has a terrific new feature with an extended field trip over two days. Right upfront participants will get real world insights from site inspections of leading timber processing operations. They will go on to enjoy a packed guest speaker series.

Many invited experts generously donate their time and expertise to this course and also to the Gottstein Understanding Forest Science course.

Both courses are key to building the knowledge base of people in our industry.

The Joseph William Gottstein Memorial Trust appreciates a partnership with the ANU Fenner School which provides the venue for the Canberra leg of the course and assists with program delivery.

This educational Trust is funded by annual donations from industry, earnings on investments and from the course. Substantial course discounts are provided to both patron and supporting sponsor donors. Interested parties wishing to donate and access discounts are encouraged to talk with Helen Murray on 0419-991-424.
