Recent changes to the building code that make it easier and more cost-effective to use timber framing and massive timber in buildings of up to 25m (usually 8 storeys) offer a once in a generation opportunity to the timber industry. Source: Timberbiz

Through the WoodSolutions program, FWPA is managing a jointly funded technical field force three-year pilot program in Victoria, with a minor extension in Queensland, which following the northern USA example is expected to contribute significant sales to the sector.

Attendance is limited to committed and potential investors.

The workshops’ outcome is to finalise the funding and management arrangements of the WoodSolutions technical field force, with learning from the US experience.

Participation in the workshop will be restricted to committed and prospective investors in the program, preferably limited to two people per company.

Proposed events are in Melbourne on Thursday 17 March, and in Brisbane on Friday 18 March.

Jennifer Cover, executive director of the USA WoodWorks program, has agreed to visit Australia to participate in the workshops and give attendees an understanding of how the North American program works in practice and its success.

Ms Cover is a California licensed professional engineer. She has been with WoodWorks since its inception and prior to this role she was National Director – Architectural & Engineering Solutions.

Since 2006, Ms Cover has been an Adjunct Professor, teaching timber design at the University of California, San Diego.

With a strong background in structural design, project management and strategic planning, Ms Cover holds an MS in Civil Engineering with emphasis on construction management from the University of California, Berkeley and a BS in Structural Engineering from the University of California, San Diego.

Ms Cover is also a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California, as well as the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
