The award recognises commitment to the future sustainability of primary industries, leadership and a willingness to share skills.

“I’m quite overwhelmed to be honest, but so excited and proud to be this year’s recipient of the Rural Women’s Award. To stand here representing foresters, and particularly women foresters, across Australia is such an honour.

“It is fantastic to have public acknowledgement that foresters are an important part of rural communities and contributing to the health of our rural landscapes.

“This award will make such a difference to my project and to supporting a bright future for foresters across Australia. I also want to send my sincerest thanks to the Institute of Foresters of Australia and to VicForests for supporting me to get here.”

Freeman has been involved in forestry projects internationally including meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace as a representative of the Commonwealth Forestry Association.

Victorian Association of Forest Industries (VAFI) chief executive officer Lisa Marty commended Michelle on her achievements and said she was an inspiration to other young women thinking about entering the industry.

“This award recognises her efforts as the director for youth and women on the Board of the Institute of Foresters of Australia and as a forester supporting women and young people to become leaders in forest management,” said Marty.

“Women play important roles throughout our industry and it is vital their valuable contribution is recognised and celebrated.

“By recognising Michelle’s contributions, we hope that this award helps encourage women in the community considering a career in any part of the forest and wood products industry to give it a go.”

Freeman is the director for youth and women on the board of the Institute of Foresters of Australia and is also a harvesting forester with VicForests.
