The Private Forestry Service Queensland (PSFQ) is holding a tour and discussion in a eucalypt plantation to explore the logistics, markets and long-term effects of a commercial thinning operation currently in progress. Source: Timberbiz
Join the PSFQ on Saturday, 21 February 8am to noon the 15- year-old eucalypt plantation.
The tour and discussion will cover aspects such as:
- Have actual growth rates achieved projections?
- Characteristics of 15-year-old hardwood trees and the effects of management and insects on timber quality and utilization.
- Current and future markets for small poles and piles, including product specifications and buyer requirements.
- Effects of thinning on tree diameter, form, product, forest structure and final crop.
- Harvest planning and operational logistics, including use of tractor and grapple for snigging and barking, and a demonstration of proving and presenting a pole for sale.
The location is at 81 Deserio Road, Cedar Pocket. From Gympie – via Tin Can Bay Rd, Cedar Pocket Rd and Bacon Rd. From Pomona – via Kin Kin Rd, Sister Tree Ck Rd, The Gap Rd, Cedar Pocket Rd and Bacon Rd).
Bring covered shoes (boots highly recommended), water bottle and appropriate sun-protective clothing. Hardhats and morning tea will be provided.
