Chadstone Link-ed with glulam arches

The “Chadstone Link”, a stylish and weather-protected walkway, links the Chadstone shopping centre in Melbourne to a new office tower “Tower 1” and to the new MGallery of the Sofitel-Hotel Group. It comprises 31 individually formed timber glulam arches. Sources: Timberbiz, Timber Architecture

On a length of 110 metres, the spaciously designed and multi-purpose area in one of the largest shopping centres of the southern hemisphere provides many possibilities for exhibitions and other events.

The 31 differently sized and individually formed timber arches made of glulam elements by Rubner Holzbau Brixen and connect to the arched glass roof of the adjoining building complex and reach, at their highest point, a height of 15 metres.

A highly translucent PTFE-cloth positioned on top of the glued laminated timber structure provides for lots of natural light.

Taking cues from the arched glass roof of the shopping centre, Make Architects designed the vaulted passageway with an Italian larch glulam diagrid structure

The space includes native soft landscaping, plentiful seating and bespoke night-time lighting, and will neatly traverse the change in site levels with travellators and stairs. The flexible design will also accommodate art installations, exhibitions and events.
