Caring for the Earth with Biochar

Passionate biochar advocates Dr Paul Taylor and Dr Stephen Joseph are coming to central Victoria on April 20-21 to teach a hands-on biochar workshop hosted by the Kyneton Transition Hub and the Bendigo Sustainability Group. Source: Timberbiz

In late 2010 Dr Taylor published The Biochar Revolution, a guide for anyone interested in biochar or concerned about environmental issues. Prof Joseph of UNSW is co-founder of the International Biochar Initiative.

As a soil additive, biochar offers numerous potential benefits. It increases the capacity for soil to hold nutrients, enhances crop yields and captures and stores carbon for the long term.

“We’ll be teaching people how to make and operate biochar ovens from recycled material such as 200 litre drums and how to prepare and condition the biochar for optimum benefits in the garden or farm,” Dr Taylor said.

If you can’t make it for the full weekend there will be a public seminar at 7pm on Friday April 19 at the Bendigo Bank Theatre at the Capital in Bendigo.

The special guest speaker for this evening is Joost Bakker, Sustainability Entrepreneur and Creator of the Greenhouse Restaurant concept.

If you are interested in attending call Julie McLaren of the Kyneton Transition Hub a call on (03) 5422 3023, or for details go to www.kynetontransitionhub.com.
