The grant will be used to assist the installation of energy efficient motors and controllers at the sawmill. This equipment upgrade is expected to reduce the carbon emissions intensity of the site by around 16%.

Announcing the Clean Technology Investment Program grant, Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change, Industry and Innovation, Yvette D’Ath, said it would help Allied Timber Products transform its operations while at the same time become more profitable.

“Installing energy efficient equipment at the Burpengary site will result in savings of up to $39,000 in energy costs per year,” D’Ath said.

“This is a significant saving that will make the company more competitive.

“Importantly, it will also help to modernise equipment at the site and improve the company’s environmental sustainability.”

The Gillard Labor Government’s grant will be matched equally by Allied Timber Products’ own investment in the project.

“I congratulate the company for taking this positive and strategic approach and making an investment into their future sustainability,” D’Ath said.

The $800 million Clean Technology Investment program is funded by revenue from the carbon price and in place to support manufacturers make the transition to a low carbon economy.

In addition, the $200 million Clean Technology Innovation Program is assisting businesses to develop new clean technologies.
